In Chamarajanagar district, Oracle’s grant supports the work of Deenabandhu Teacher Resource Center to reach over 90 schools in four of the five blocks of Chamarajanagar taluk.

The Deenabandu Teacher Resource Center creates material to teach Science, made entirely with local materials. All descriptions are in Kannada, making it widely accessible to teachers. Textbook material is very removed from children’s day-to-day life, and the resource center enables teachers to connect Science to the students’ lives. Science is connected to local life and local events, de-mystifying material contained within the textbook. With Oracle’s grant, Deenbandhu reaches teachers in upper primary schools through teacher workshops, school visits, and a Kannada Science newsletter, Anubhava, tailored to the syllabus and lesson plans. Readership of Anubhava is rapidly growing. “We are deeply indebted to Oracle and Asha for Education for enabling our endeavor to bring in a culture of activity based teaching among the teachers of Chamarajanagar district,” says Mr. Jayadeva, founder and visionary of the Teacher Resource Center. “This can replace rote learning and children can learn experientially, raising contextual questions and becoming active participants in teacher-student interactions.”
