The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act also popularly known as the Right to Education Act (RTE), was enacted on 4 August 2009, which made education a fundamental right of every child in India between the ages of 6 and 14. This is a ground breaking act that has set the base line norms of various important parameters of education including the infrastructure schools should have, mid-day meals, admission norms, free space for underprivileged kids in private run schools etc.
Although the act came into force on 1 April 2010, the overall condition of government schools in most parts of india remains way below par. To understand the seriousness of the issue, Sahanivasa did a survey of the government school infrastructure in 2013 using RTI requests with in a pilot sample set of 86 government schools and 7 government hostels in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It was found that 91% of schools do not have toilets, 95% of schools do not have any sitting arrangements like desks, 68% of schools did not have electricity, 60% of schools do not have drinking water facilities etc.
Sahanivasa through its long history of participation in peoples movements, understands that an effective way of improving the condition of schools is by sensitizing the village population about RTE. 1) Sensitize the parent and youth communities in villages about their legal rights under RTE act.
2) Sensitize the parent community from the under privileged sections of the society about the importance of educating their children.
3) Facilitate grassroots level people driven intervention in better implementation of the act.
4) Help the kids from under privileged communities secure admission into private schools under the 25% quota granted by RTE.
5) Create a common platform for various NGOs in Andhra Pradesh and other states to represent to the govt the deficiencies in the implementation of RTE and ensure effective RTE implementation

Sahanivasa has been a long time partner of Asha for Education. With a partnership that spans 13+ years, Sahanivasa has been funded by various chapters of Asha for Education, most notably the Boston/MIT chapter. Asha Boston has supported several programs of Sahanivasa at various times including non-formal education centers, programs that spread awareness in the dalit and tribal communities about the importance of education, providing libraries to government schools, supporting various disaster relief and rehabilitation activities (during the tsunami and floods in Andhra Pradesh), NREGA awareness campaigns to ensure sustainable livelihoods etc.
Sahanivasa has been working in the Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh since 1985 on organizing dalits, landless laborers, and women on a variety of issues. These include implementation of land reforms, organizing for minimum wages and tenancy rights, organizing for gender equity and rights, monitoring, documenting and disseminating information about human rights violations (discrimination, untouchability practices, rape, burning of villages, etc. by higher castes) and violations of women s rights and organizing local actions to address such violations. Sahanivasa also lobbies actively for changes in existing laws, new laws and implementation of the laws governing these issues. Sahanivasa further works to empower and increase the confidence of the populations with which they work. Dalits, who constitute 24% of the Indian population (216 million) are the people who form the lowest social strata in Indian society.
